Nuptials Near...
Regular readers of The LG Report know that LG's wedding date is fast approaching. Very fast.
Many years ago, one of LG's friends was standing at the alter of a Catholic church awaiting his future wife at the start of their wedding ceremony.
Just as the beautiful bride reached the top of the aisle and was about to embark upon her father-escorted walk to the alter, my buddy's best man whispered to him "Hey, John, just remember, there's only one thing worse than being alone when you're old."
"What's that?" asked John.
"Wishing you were alone!"
That story comes to mind far more often than LG would like to admit when contemplating marriage.
Ah, but that exchange was just an attempt at humor by the best man. It wasn't genuine advice. And, in fact, John and his wonderful bride are still married today, almost 20 years later.
Still, there's a teeny, tiny, microscopic little bit of LG that fears that this is what he's getting into:
When, in reality, he'd like to be signing on for this:
But let's face it men, nobody gets to sign on for the above in the real world.
Truth be told, LG is marrying the love of his life and couldn't be happier. He's not sure how much, if any, of the wedding and reception will be chronicled in The LG Report. That issue has to be discussed with his new life partner; LG is sensitive to the process of joint decision making now that he'll be one-half of a married couple -- especially since he's violated the rule a few times already!
But whatever is decided, this is what LG expects his marriage to be like:

Wikileaks: US Ambdassador Called Pakistani Military Instructors "Naive" And "Biased"

The Pakistani daily Dawn says that according to Wikileaks, in 2008, Anne Patterson, who was then US Ambassador to Pakistan, wrote a memo in which she described instructors at Pakistan's National Defence University (NDU) as "naive" about and "biased" against the USA.
Dawn says Ambassador Patterson attributed this "bias" to the "distance" that had crept in between Pakistani and US military officers following "the discontinuation of the IMET (International Military Education and Training) programmes" during the years when Pakistan was under sanctions because of having developed nuclear weapons.
Dawn quotes the memo which quotes a US army officer, Col. Michael Schleicher, who attended a course at NDU, and who, according to the cable, told Ambassador Patterson:
"One guest lecturer – who is a Pakistani one-star general – claimed the US National Security Agency actively trains correspondents for media organisations. Others thought the CIA was in charge of US media (and that MI-5 was in charge of the BBC)."And not only that, but:
Students in the junior course ... shared "many of the biases prevalent in the Muslim world, including a belief the US invaded Iraq for its oil and that 9/11 was a staged 'Jewish conspiracy,'"You can see the bias right away, can't you? Everybody who has done honest research has found that the staged conspiracy of 9/11 was not entirely "Jewish." It contained "Christian" elements as well. And so, of course, does the continuing torrent of nonsense about it.
The problem, according to Dawn, according to Wikileaks, according to Ambassador Patterson, was that the Pakistani military had been been insufficiently propagandized, although she would never think to express herself in such terms. But clearly this is her understanding, and clearly this is why she wrote:
"We need, in particular, to target the 'lost generation' of Pakistan military who missed IMET opportunities..."The word 'target' is particularly apt in this context.
Ambassador Patterson also wrote, according to Wikileaks:
"Given the bias of the instructors, we also believe it would be beneficial to initiate an exchange program for instructors..."An exchange program would double the propaganda benefit, of course, because the Pakistani instructors would be whisked off to be indoctrinated in the US, leaving their students to be indoctrinated by visiting Americans.
It goes without saying that if and when all this indoctrination came to pass, the Pakistani military would be even more naive with respect to the United States, and even more biased -- but for rather than against, which after all is the only thing that matters to the masters of the American Empire.
And then, diplomatic tensions would be eased, because future ambassadors would write cables in which Pakistani military officers were all well-informed about American actions and motives, and loyal and keen supporters of the American Imperial Project as well.
The properly trained Pakistanis would have been instructed never to admit that the NSA would be negligent if it failed to actively train correspondents for media organisations; that the CIA would be aghast if it lost charge of the US media; that the Bush-Cheney administration would have lost the support of its "base" had it failed to invade Iraq for its oil; and that MI5 would go ballistic if the BBC ever admitted the obvious truths about these things, or explained to its viewers exactly why Britain came along for the ride.
And then, if the IMET programmes could continue for long enough, eventually nobody in the Pakistani military would ever again be "naive" or "biased" enough to give voice to any of this, or any of the other truths about America which are, shall we say, politically inconvenient to acknowledge.
This is what we would call "winning hearts and minds." And it's a shame that the US neglected to keep the propaganda machine running on the Pakistani military during the sanctions, because had it done so, hoaxes such as the big one nine and a half years ago, and the almost-as-big one earlier this month, would have been a good deal easier to sell.

The Sorbsy Cup 2011
Once a year, in late May or early June, a group of about eight guys (half from the Philadelphia area and half from the New York area) get together at the South Jersey Shore to contest The Sorbsy Cup, a golf competition between average-ish golfers from those two metropolitan areas. Average-ish is probably being kind, but just go with it.
This has been occurring for just over ten years. It's really is of no significance to anyone other than the participants, but it's a good excuse to get together annually with some buddies who you would otherwise not see on a regular basis.
For this year's competition, LG (captain of the New York team) took it upon himself to make a new trophy. Here's an interesting fact that you may not know about trophies: If you carry one in public, people will approach you with no reluctance to ask where you got it and what you did to earn it. The New Sorbsy Cup looks like this:
LG scoured the internet for a large-and-ostentatious trophy that wouldn't cost him an arm and a leg. He could find none cheaper than $600. So he decided to make his own. This Sorbsy Cup was originally intended to be a vase for reeds and tall artificial flowers when it was offered for sale at an outlet of the Michael's craft store chain. LG picked it up for $18.25 and invested another $3.25. in a can of chrome spray paint at Home Depot. One of the competition's participants remarked that the seashells on the bottom of The Cup looked a little "feminine," but LG explained that they were in keeping with the Shore location of the matches (a bit of quick thinking on LG's part, thank you.)
Here's a picture of Sorbsy, the creator and namesake of the event, holding The New Cup:
LG regrets to announce that Team Philadelphia won the event this year (Team New York was the defending champ), and so they get to bring home the hardware and show it off for the next 12 months.
Here's a snapshot of just one of the many groups of fans who asked to have their pictures taken with The Sorbsy Cup. A $5 fee was charged for each photo and donated to charity [Not really, but it sounds good.]
The girl on the left has probably never had a worst photo taken of her than this one. But, then again, they all look better when posing next to Sorbsy (sorry Sorbsy, that's what you get for winning The Cup.)
And just in case you think that The Sorbsy Cup is contested in high-class locales, here's a sign that was in the men's room at one of the bars that was frequented:
